Assateague Island, MD-VA

This uninhabited barrier island between Maryland and Virginia is best known as a wildlife habitat, and home to feral horse herds that have made Assateague famous. The federally protected Assateague Island sees more than 320 bird species throughout the year. Its horse population is kept at bay by the legendary Pony Swim & Auction every July.
